When people are unified for a common cause, it is a sight to behold. They encourage and love and celebrate and enjoy the common goal. People also sacrifice and fight together to uphold their common allegiances. Sports teams have their fan faithful, politics have theirs, entertainers amass followings, various causes have their troops, communities/towns/states and nations have theirs, families have theirs. Regardless of who starts a rally cry, there are those who will answer. Baseball fans in the southeast heard their rally cry on Tuesday night, November 2, around 11:38pm ET.
On the streets of Atlanta, Friday, November 5, 2021, was the rally’s answer. There were estimates of 600 thousand to a million people all along a parade route and several networks boasting untold times more people than that viewing either live and/or recorded stream of the event that honored the team that unified not just a city, but a significant portion of the southeast. This isn’t the first such event to draw a crowd. There have been many others. But as a participant on this particular occasion, I excitedly anticipated the arrival of the subjects of this crazed affection. As I waited, I was made aware of the approach of the entourage because outside there arose such an uproar among the crowd that inside, the group I was with began anticipatory cheering. With one deafening voice, we lifted up our love and allegiance and celebration and support. It brought every sense I had to a peak…my goosebumps had goosebumps. And then….it occurred to me – this is not even a FRACTION of what lies ahead when our coming King, Jesus Christ, makes His 2nd appearance here on this earth!!! When I began to contemplate that, in the midst of this already overwhelming elation of a crowd that I was part of, I became very emotional.
When our King of kings comes, the One whose name is above every name, the name of JESUS – EVERY knee will bow, those in heaven, and those on earth, and those under the earth, and EVERY tongue will confess that JESUS CHRIST IS LORD, to the glory of God the Father!! Philippians 2:9-12
As I looked around at the adulation for our beloved team, I saw fans of lots of different affiliations, teams, political parties, races, creeds, religions – coming together, UNITED, to celebrate this common bond. I saw babies that looked like they went from the birthing room to the parade route; I saw some incredibly elderly people being wheeled, escorted, or tended to as they cheered with feeble but heartfelt smiles; I saw infirmed people bedecked in festive themed garb and shouting for joy. There was no boundary that wasn’t crossed in making up the unified joyful celebration, except for representation of the opposing team.
Revelation 7:9-10 has the apostle John describing what he saw in front of the throne of God: I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people, and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” There will be no boundary among those who will be at the throne of God, except for those who oppose Him.
The apostle Paul quotes Isaiah when he tells us, no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no human mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him. (I Cor 2:9) We simply cannot fathom the celebration!
If what I experienced – eyes saw, ears heard, mind absorbed – this mass of humanity unified for one joyous purpose, WE ARE IN FOR A SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS experience before the throne of JESUS!! Jesus exhorts us to be unified in and through Him and the attitude with which He lived: with one mind and one voice, glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Rom 15: 6). We cannot do this on our own – we have created too many factions in every single aspect of life, *and yet* this is Jesus’s plea throughout scripture, to lean on Him for this unity.
I gotta say that on Friday, my eyes leaked, my mouth yelled, my heart quivered – but when I thought about Jesus’s return, all of those sensations were elevated even more.
I can’t wait to cheer on JESUS with the largest multitude ever assembled! It is going to be mind, body and spirit BLOWING!! So, we should shout His name in eager anticipation of His arrival because He IS COMING – HALLELUJAH!!
